This focus workshop is being organized primarily by and for the ocean biogeochemistry (OBGC) community within natESM, with the aim of taking stock of the current modeling landscape, exploring integration challenges, and strengthening interfaces with other natESM components. As such, input from colleagues working on other core components is very welcome, especially regarding points of coupling and technical compatibility.

The workshop will take place in person in Hamburg on September 24, 2025, 10:00 - 16:00

Registration is closed.

Preliminary agenda: natESM Focus Workshop on Ocean Biogeochemistry

    Welcome and Introduction

    • 10:00 - Jochem Marotzke (MPI-M, natESM Co-Chair): Welcome and short input on natESM and purpose of focus workshops

Community presentations – Ocean Biogeochemistry Modeling (17+3 min each)

    • 10:15 - Judith Hauck and Chris Danek (AWI): Overview of recent and planned developments of REcoM, modeling and observational links
    • 10:35 - Tatiana Ilyina (UHH/MPI-M): Ocean Biogeochemistry in the ICON Framework: Challenges and Opportunities
    • 10:55 - Kai Logemann (Hereon): ECOSMO and ECOSMO_E2E: Perspectives and integration challenges

    11:15 - Short coffee break

Community Presentations – continued (17+3 min each)

    • 13:45 - Moderated discussion (Chair: Jochem Marotzke)
      • Agreeing on strategies for integration (e.g., potential for consensus on ocean/biogeochemical requirements and approaches)
      • Ensuring compatibility and synergies with other natESM components
      • Strategies for a coherent modeling approach across the community

15:30 – Next steps and action items
