Day 1 – Opening, sprint reviews & breakout groups

Morning session

The workshop opened with welcome remarks by Armin Matthes (DLR Projektträger), also speaking on behalf of the BMFTR.

This was followed by the introductory session:

The introduction outlined natESM’s strategic direction and emphasized the importance of sustainable, community-driven model development.

Participants then reviewed the progress, achievements, and challenges of five sprints completed over the past year:

  • PALM sprint [Siegfried Raasch (Leibniz University Hannover), Wilton Loch (DKRZ)]
  • MESSy-ComIn2 sprint [Bastian Kern (DLR), L. Aparna Devulapalli (DKRZ)]
  • PISM sprint [Torsten Albrecht (MPI-GEA), Wilton J. Loch (DKRZ)]
  • ICON-XPP sprint [Trang van Pham (DWD), Sergey Sukov (JSC) - presented by Kristina Fröhlich (DWD)]
  • ICON-YAC-CLEO2 sprint [Clara Bayley (MPI-M), L. Aparna Devulapalli (DKRZ)]

The sprint presentations highlighted both technical advances and lessons learned in collaborative model development.

The session concluded with a community-wide introduction to ComIn, including:

During the lunch break, participants had the opportunity to visit a nearby air quality monitoring station, gaining valuable insights into observational infrastructure. Many thanks to Roland Schrödner (TROPOS) for organizing this visit.

Afternoon sessions

The afternoon continued in two parallel breakout groups:

  • Impact modeling
  • ICON paleo modeling

Both groups engaged in in-depth discussions on code development, model innovation, community needs, and scientific priorities.

The day concluded with an icebreaker session and a joint dinner, providing space for informal exchange and strengthening connections across institutions.

Day 2 – Keynote, discussions and wrap-up

The second day began with a keynote lecture by Peer Nowack (KIT):

One hour to shape tomorrow

Following the keynote, we had a mixed panel-fishbowl discussion with intensive exchange regarding the future of AI in natESM.

After a coffee break, the outcomes of the breakout-group discussions of the first day were subsequently shared with all participants:

  • Impact modeling [Jakob Zscheischler (UFZ)]
  • ICON paleo modeling [Kira Rehfeld (University of Tübingen)]
Closing
  • The workshop concluded with a summary and outlook by Jochem Marotzke (MPI-M).
