- Winter is coming. All eyes on clouds: Visualization and analysis of nested weather simulation data in omniverse
Mar 24, 2022 from 05:00 PM to 05:30 PM
(Europe/Berlin / UTC100)
Clouds play a huge role for our daily life — shall I bring an umbrella? Do I need to put on the snow boots? — but also in climate science and clouds' interaction with global warming. It's not entirely clear if global warming will lead to more, less, or the same amount of cloud cover. Studying clouds and cloud processes, such as their evolution and rain and snow formation, helps to give insight into understanding clouds. In order to simulate clouds, very high-resolution weather models that can resolve clouds directly are needed. We'll show and evaluate our framework for studying clouds and other weather phenomena directly in Omniverse. As data, we use a nested ICON simulation from the German Weather Service (DWD) that showcases a number of interesting weather details. This is joint work between DWD, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ), and NVIDIA.
