We are happy to announce that applications are now open for the first natESM Summer School, which will take place from 13–19 September 2026 in Kiel.

The Summer School is aimed at early-career scientists (ECS) who are interested in gaining hands-on experience with Earth system modelling in the natESM framework.

Programme highlights: Keynote lectures from Jochem Marotzke (MPI-M) and Sabine Attinger (UFZ)

Summer School highlights

During the week, participants will work in small groups on scientific questions and analyze simulations based on the first natESM configuration, running on the Levante supercomputer at DKRZ. The program combines keynote lectures, short component inputs, extensive hands-on sessions, and close interaction with researchers and research software engineers from the natESM community.

Possible directions for the group work might cover:
  • Climate variability in the coupled Earth system
  • Climate change under strong greenhouse-gas forcing
  • Ocean processes and circulation
  • Land-surface processes and feedbacks
  • Using climate simulations for impact modelling

The Summer School is primarily intended for applicants based in Germany. Applications from Switzerland (ICON partners) are also welcome.

Participation is free of charge, and accommodation and meals will be covered by natESM. Participants are expected to attend the full program; late cancellations or unexcused absence will normally result in a no-show fee of 100 €.

📝 Application deadline: 15 May 2026
