In the winter semester 2025/2026, a new master-level course will start at the University of Cologne.
The course introduces students to the national Earth System Modeling (natESM) System and provides insights inot its different model components, technical foundations, and the challenges ahead in climate modeling. Each lecture will be accompanied by hands-on exercises, allowing studnets to explore and analyze model simulations themselves.
Lectures will be given by experts from German research institutions, including members from the natESM team (Iris Ehlert, Aparna Devulapalli), the steering group (Hauke Schmidt, Corinna Hoose), and the broader natESM community.
Have a look at the detailed course program here.
While the course is initially hosted at the University of Cologne, its modular and hybrid format is designed to enable collaboration with other universities in the future.
