This week, 23 early-career researchers have come together in Kiel for the first natESM Summer School on Earth System Modelling in a Changing Climate.

The Summer School kicked off with a keynote by natESM Co-Chair Jochem Marotzke, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. The next day participants are getting started with Earth system modelling, HPC and the natESM approach.

At the heart of the Summer School is a hands-on challenge: How do you actually run a coupled Earth system model on a supercomputer – and what do you do with the results? Participants will work with the coupled ICON-XPP configuration on DKRZ’s Levante supercomputer, learn how to set up and run simulations, explore the resulting model output, and develop their own scientific questions and hypotheses to investigate during the week.

Lectures and discussions complement the hands-on work, covering everything from Earth system components and model evaluation to climate impacts and modelling tools.

In this way, the Summer School reflects the broader natESM vision: bringing together scientists and research software engineers to build a flexible, modular and community-supported Earth system modelling system.

A week of experimenting, analyzing, learning, and exchanging ideas lies ahead!
